HOW ARE OUR PLANTS GROWN?
Soil: All our plants are grown in Vermont Compost Lite Soil Mix. Vermont Compost is a certified organic operation that provide high quality soil mixes for growers and gardeners alike.
Amendments: All of our soil mix is inoculated with Rootshield, an organic biological fungicide that aids in the prevention of fungal diseases like; damping-off, root rot, crown rot, and wilt caused by species of Fusarium, Phytophthora, Pythium, Rhizoctonia and other soilborne pathogens. The two active bacteria in Rootshield are: Trichoderma harzianum Rifai strain T-22 and Trichoderma virens strain G-41. Rootshield increases nutrient uptake, does not interfere with beneficial insects, and does not leave behind any residue. This is an OMRI approved and certified organic product that we use in all our transplants on the farm.
We also fertilize all our plants as needed with Neptune’s Harvest 2-4-1 Organic Fish Fertilizer.
Seeds: Our seeds are sourced from the following companies: Johnny’s Selected Seeds, Osborne Seeds, Seedway, Totally Tomatoes, Seeds From Italy, Swallowtail Seeds, Prairie Moon Nursery, Prairie Nursery, Pepper Joe’s, and Uprising Seeds. We purchase organic seeds when available. SEEDS ARE ALWAYS NON-GMO AND NOT TREATED.
Plugs: We purchase in some slow to grow plugs from North Carolina Farms and this includes: Lavender, Rosemary, Lemon Balm, Oregano, Thyme, Mint, Tarragon, Geraniums, Strawberries, and Lemongrass. North Carolina Farms is not certified organic, once plugs reach our greenhouse they are grown out as we would grow any of our other starts: with Vermont Compost, Rootshield, and OMRI certified amendments.
Cuttings: We are starting our very own nursery! Our cuttings come from private gardens, Arthur’s Point Farm, and the Water and Soil Conservation branch of the USDA. Stay tuned!
